The UDC is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the quality of urban places in Western Australia. It provides professional design and research services, urban design education and public programs to promote a richer, more inclusive dialogue about design and planning issues.

Established in 2004 by the State Department for Planning and Infrastructure, Curtin University of Technology and The University of Western Australia, the UDC is the first of its kind in Australia - a unique partnership of government and academic expertise in urban design and planning that works with communities throughout the State to make our towns and cities better places to live and work.

The UDC develops design proposals for sites of special public significance, undertakes collaborative research projects and offers education and advocacy programs, bringing to bear the resources of The University of Western Australia's design school and an independent staff of qualified urban designers to work with government agencies, non-profit organisations, special interest groups and community stakeholders.

In all its work, the UDC seeks to:

  • create liveable, sustainable communities,
  • enhance the public realm,
  • preserve natural and cultural resources,
  • promote economic prosperity, and
  • engage communities in decision-making processes.
