This component of the UDC's mission is focused on developing a stronger urban design culture in Western Australia, creating a shared sense of responsibility for the quality of the urban environment and encouraging wider community participation in a productive debate about the future of our cities and neighbourhoods.

Advocacy programs include a variety of structured and informal activities designed to promote awareness of the importance of good design in city building and to stimulate a rich and provocative dialogue about significant urban development issues of Perth and the regional communities of WA.

In 2005 the UDC participated in various design and planning workshops and forums and supported public presentations by visiting guests such as Rob Adams, Director of Design and Culture at the City of Melbourne and Jan Gael, architect and urban designer from Copenhagen.

Local events included Curtin University of Technology's Innovation Festival, Watercorp's lecture series on sustainable design, the HURIWA symposium on "Baby Boomers in Retirement", a Continuing Professional Development seminar for the Planning Institute of Australia's WA Chapter and a workshop on reducing community violence sponsored by the Office of Crime Prevention.
