CENTRESTAGE
International Design Competition
The Department of Culture and
the Arts is developing a new
state-of-the-art venue for the
performing arts, sited at the
corner of William and Roe Streets
in the Perth Cultural Centre.
Recognising architecture as
a critical component of the
performance experience and the
urban design significance of
this prominent site, DCA chose
to select an architect for the
project through an international
design competition. This competition
was seen as a way to achieve
a cutting-edge facility for
creative production in the performing
arts, as well as an internationally
recognised symbol of the vitality
and innovation of the arts community
of Perth.
The UDC served as Competition
Administrator in a two-stage
process which was judged by
a distinguished panel of international
and local architects and an
experienced artistic director.
The competition concluded in
November 2005 with the unanimous
selection of a concept design
by Kerry Hill Architects as
the winner.
