THE
CONTESTED COAST
National
Urban Design Forum 2007
The National Urban Design Forum
was held from the 29th April
to the 1st May 2007 in the rapidly
growing coastal city of Mandurah,
about 50 kilometres south of
Perth. In this 20th year of
the Urban Design Forum, design
issues surrounding water in
the urban context were brought
forward for discussion and relevant
projects were presented by a
number of dedicated professionals.
Conference participants heard
speakers from across Australia
on such topics as:
• competing interests
in coastal development
• the integration of working
ports and surrounding urban
areas
• the impact of water
restrictions on urban design
• integrated waste water
treatment in the urban setting,
and
• green roofs and living
walls
A feature of this conference was
a brief design workshop for the
host City of Mandurah. After a
bus tour of Mandurah's main areas
of proposed development, conference
participants formed into groups
and put pen to paper to suggest
solutions for trouble spots and
to highlight perceived opportunties.
