The UDC's mission is to lead the pursuit of urban design excellence in Western Australia by developing innovative solutions to complex urban design problems and testing new processes and techniques for improving design quality. With a strong economy stimulating growth throughout the State, we don't have to look far for exciting urban design initiatives that offer opportunities for the exploration of new concepts and methods.

To address the many different types of urban challenges facing a developing region, the UDC is building a multi-disciplinary staff of urban designers, architects, landscape architects and planners. The UDC is also uniquely positioned to draw upon its collaboration with the design and research experience of the staff of The University of Western Australia.

Priority projects for the UDC include planning for sites of particular public significance, in cultural or environmental terms; studies that produce generally applicable conclusions, rather than a solution for a specific site; and planning for contentious or multi-jurisdictional sites where a disinterested party such as the UDC can assist in brokering consensus.

In every project, our objectives include:

  • uncovering the unique qualities of the location,
  • celebrating its architectural heritage and cultural traditions,
  • preserving and enhancing its natural features,
  • responding to the concerns and aspirations of the local community, and producing a practical and effective plan of action that leads directly to implementation.
